Music Tutorial - Work out minor chords and minor seventh chords

Step 1:
Choose the root or bass note of the chord you are working out. In this case we are working out C-Minor but all minor chords will work in exactly the same way.
Step 2:
Now choose the second note of the chord. You can do this very easily by counting up 3 notes (including the black ones) from the root note. In the case of C-Major it's third is the note 'Eb'.
Step 3:
Now choose the third note of the chord. You can do this by counting 4 notes (including the black ones) from the second note of the chord. In this case the third note is 'G'.
The chord above is called C-minor sometimes printed as Cm or CMin. If you want to create a Cm7 (c minor seventh) chord then continue on to Step 4. The seventh chord below is often used in jazz or blues music. Try it out and you will hear the difference.
Step 4:
To make the chord C minor 7, count 3 notes (including black notes) up from the chord's 3rd note. In the case of Cm7 the seventh will be 'Bb'(flat).
Step 5:
If you try the same pattern starting on a different note you will be able to produce the minor chord / minor seventh chord for that note. Give it a try!
