Music Tutorial - Work out major chords and major seventh chords
| Step 1: |
Choose the root or bass note of the chord you are working out. In this case we are working out C-Major but all chords will work in exactly the same way. |
| Step 2: |
Now choose the second note of the chord. You can do this very easily by counting up 4 notes including the black ones (semitones) from the root note. In the case of C-Major it's second note is the note 'E'. |
| Step 3: |
Now choose the third note of the chord. You can do this by counting 3 notes including the black ones (semitones) from the second note of the chord. In this case the third note is 'G'. |
The chord above is called C-Major sometimes printed as CM or CMaj. If you want to create a C7 or CM7 (seventh) chord then continue on to Step 4 and 5. The seventh chords below are often used in jazz or blues music. Try them out and you will hear the difference.
| Step 4: |
To make the chord C7 or C Seventh, count 3 notes including black notes (semitones) up from the chord's 3rd note. In the case of C7 the seventh will be 'Bb'(flat). |
| Step 5: |
You may be trying to make the chord C Major 7th, sometimes printed as CM7. In order to do this you must count 4 notes including the black notes (semitones) from the chord's 3rd note. In the case of C Major 7th the seventh will be 'B'. |
| If you try the same pattern starting on a different note you will be able to produce the major chord / seventh chords for that note. Give it a try! |
